What is pound-force foot?

Pound-force foot (lbf-ft or lb-ft) is a unit of torque, which is a measure of the rotational force applied to an object. It is defined as the amount of torque required to create a force of one pound-force (lbf) at a distance of one foot from the axis of rotation.

One pound-force foot is equal to 1.35582 newton meters (Nm) or 12.0000 inch-pounds (in-lb). It is commonly used in engineering and physics applications, particularly in the United States.

For example, the torque required to tighten a nut on a bolt can be measured in pound-force feet. If a force of 10 pounds is applied at a distance of 1 foot from the bolt, the torque applied would be 10 pound-force feet.

It is important to note that pound-force feet should not be confused with pound-feet (lb-ft), which is a unit of work or energy.
